With many options in injectable treatments available today, it can be difficult to know which treatment will best meet your specific needs. For those contemplating an injectable treatment to produce a younger, refreshed appearance, check out these differences between Botox™ and dermal fillers to find the best treatment for you.

About Botox/Dysport
Botox/Dysport™ works by relaxing the facial muscles that form fine lines and wrinkles. It tends to work best on dynamic wrinkles that form when the facial muscles contract. The result is smoother looking skin without compromising the muscles’ ability to make facial expressions. Botox/Dysport™ injections typically last around four months before a touch-up treatment is required.

Dermal fillers are solutions that are injected beneath the skin’s surface to support the underlying skin structure. As the solution fills in that area, skin is smoothed and plumped from the inside out. Dermal fillers can also be used to enhance facial contours, such as plumping lips, filling in cheeks or rounding out the jawline. Depending on the formula, some of these treatments can last 12 months or more before a touch-up is needed.

What’s right for you?
There are distinct differences between Botox/Dysport™ and dermal fillers. For example, Botox/Dysport™ tends to work better on the following wrinkles:

  • Vertical lines between the eyebrows;
  • Horizontal lines across the forehead;
  • Fine lines in the outer corners of the eyes.

Dermal fillers are often recommended for the following concerns:

  • Facial folds around the bottom of the nose, mouth and chin;
  • Adding volume to thin lips or hollow cheeks;
  • Reducing the appearance of shallow scarring.
  • fills in hollows under the eyes
  • fills in hollows in the temples
  • plumps up cheeks and sides of the face to lift and add volume (nonsurgical face lift)

In some cases, a combination of Botox/Dysport™ and a dermal filler or a combination of filler formulas may be needed – one to smooth out nasolabial folds and another to fill out cheeks for a more youthful facial profile.  Different fillers produce different results.  A consultation prior to having your procedure done (can be done at injection time) ensures that the right filler is being used to achieve your desired results.
